STAR OF THE MONTH: BENJAMIN GORDON

Benjamin hard at work during tournament game at P.S. 116

Fourth-grader Benjamin Gordon is a veteran member of the PS 116 chess team, and has already represented his school for four years. He was a team member for the 2003 National Champions, and this past May was a member of the 2006 National Champions. His rating is well over 1000.

But Benjamin's leadershp on the P.S. 116 chess team goes beyond his victories in tournaments, numerous though they are. In class, he constantly supports his teammates. After snack time, he helps the teachers clean up when other students run away. Extremely well-behaved, always paying attention to his teachers and willing to lend a helping hand...Benjamin is one of the nicest students NYChessKids teachers have ever had the pleasure of teaching.

He's also very popular with P.S. 116's female population...!

His mother Julie and father Peter are very involved in supporting the chess program in PS 116. They are clearly interested in seeing the school and the entire chess program thrive, and not just their own children, since their commitment has never withered over the years.

His brother Jacob, now in 8th grade, also played for the 2001 National Champions at PS 116.
