| * Kramnik is making last moves before Topalov's resignation in the last rapid game of the WCC match. * a short fragment of the press-conference with Vladimir Kramnik after FIDE WCC 2006 match. фрагмент послематчевого интервью с Владимиром Крамником 13.10.2006 Vladimir Kramnik: "This was a very tough match, and I think I did a good job, considering the odds given to the opponent... Maybe it was the first case in the history of the world championship matches when one of the players had extra point and extra White. I am glad I managed to win under such circumstances. | |
Vishy Anand after winning Groningen in 1998
| In December and January (98-99) FIDE staged its world championship, with a hundred of the strongest players in the world gathered in Groningen to determine who would play against Karpov in the finals. It was also a long affair, going on for weeks and draining the strength of the participants who went on to the end. After the game Anand and Aruna face the photographers. You can hear them talking to Arvind Aaron. Then they turn to Emmanuel Omuku (FIDE Rep.)and ask about arrangements for transport to Lausanne. There are none, no plane reservations or anything. A Dutch organiser and some Indian friends try to help out with constructive suggestions. Anand and Aruna ended up making all arrangements themselves. There the hotel just barely had rooms for them and Ubilava, and Anand’s suite was about $500 a night. All this was quite disturbing, since there were going to be more people coming (Jussupov and Leko). Fortunately the next day the hotel told them that FIDE was receiving special prices and they could take advantage of that. So they ended up paying 220 SFr, around $150, per room. After they had solved all problems and settled down Anand discovered that he had just three hours left for preparation for his opponent in the world championship final! | |

Mentoring PSA - Chess
| There are approximately 14 million young people in America who may not have a productive adulthood without positive intervention. Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) provides one-to-one mentoring relationships between adult volunteers and children in 460 programs throughout the U.S. They have partnered with the Ad Council for this PSA campaign which encourages individuals to volunteer for BBBS and share simple, life-changing moments with a child. For the latest effort, BBBS teamed with the White House and the First Lady to support her 'Helping America's Youth' initiative and deliver a message about the importance of mentoring. The campaign communicates that by becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister, you can be the person who brings magic into the life of a child. Viewers and listeners are urged to visit www.bigbrothersbigsisters.org to find out how they can get involved with their local Big Brothers Big Sisters agency. | |

JUDIT POLGAR SIMUL FROM 1999
In a tribute to her brilliant victory at the 2006 Essent Hoogoveen tournament, including two wins over the #1 ranked player in the world, Veselin Topalov, here is footage from a simul Judit Polgar gave in Germany in 1999. It looks like she is playing 30 people of all ages at once.A "simul" (short for "simultaneous exhibition") is when a stronger player plays against many weaker players at the same time. The stronger player, moves from board to board, usually taking the white pieces in every game, and plays a move. The opponents do not play their reply until the master has returned to their board. When the simul-giver returns, the opponent plays their next move, and the exhibitor plays the reply, often instantly.

You can see players like Jose Raoul Capablanca, Richard Reti, Frank Marshall, Carlos Torre, etc. actually playing at the board! (Chess was so much different back then...).The movie has no words, but the scenes are accompanied by Classical music. It is 19 minutes long, and fun to watch, especially from a historical chess perspective!

STARS AT TURIN OLYMPIAD; KIDS PLAYING CHESS

Check out this very nice 4 minute video! Produced in Switzerland, it begins with the extremely tense and intense players who competed in the recent Chess Olympiad, held in Turin, Italy in May and June. Stars like Vassily Ivanchuk, Gata Kamsky, Elizabeth Paehtz, and Alexandra Kosteniuk are recognizable, among many others.
Then, the video departs the tense scene and we look in on scholastic competitions. It's not clear what event the footage is from, but it very much looks like a Nationals-type event in Europe. It shows kids and adults playing chess with much less intensity that the stars shown in the first minute. At the end, the kids receive their trophies and other prizes, and their excitement is contagious!

BETTY BOOP CHESS CARTOON FROM 1932

Below is a link to a funny cartoon episode (6 minutes) featuring Betty Boop characters, dressed as chess pieces and playing on a chess board!
The scene begins with two men playing chess, and suddenly the characters emerge, bringing the chess pieces to life.
At the end of the cartoon, the scene shifts back to the two men; they have grown much older (apparently still playing the same game of chess) as shown by them both growing very long beards!
