OUR STUDENT: ETAN KOREN

Picture below: Etan receives his trophy from Hilary at the P.S. 116 Tournament, October 29, 2006
Etan is a second-grade student at P.S. 116. He began playing chess in Kindergarten and maybe before. Both his parents and his older brother Tamir are avid chessplayers. What a wonderful foundation for a young chessplayer!

Certainly, Etan is very creative and has lots of potential for chess. For his chess teachers, the spark of creativity that Etan possesses for the game is very apparent. His understanding of many middlegame positions is very sophisticated for someone of such a young age, and he catches onto the thread of the game (in lessons) very quickly, as Vladimir Kramnik said of Boris Spassky.

Etan participates in the National Scholastic Championshps every year, and has done so since Kindergarten: this means the "December Nationals" (the National Scholastic K-12 Grade Championships) and the "Spring Nationals" (the National Elementary Scholastic Championships). FYI: the difference is that the Grade championships pit students against each other in the same school grade, and the National Elementary championships have divisions for K-3 and K-6.

Etan is currently preparing for the Nationals in Orlando, Florida in December. We wish him much success!
