OUR STUDENT: JUSTIN KARP

Justin is a sixth-grade student at Horace Mann School. He began playing in chess tournaments in Kindergarten, though he learned to play the game before this. Justin took a tremendous interest in the game, and has never stopped working to try and improve.

He has competed successfully for years in chess tournaments just about EVERYWHERE: he has played in basically every scholastic chess tournament in the city; at the Marshall Chess Club; at the Manhattan Chess Club while it still existed. Justin leads his team at City Championships, State Championships, and Nationals, every year. In 2003, Justin tied for first with Parker Zhao at SuperNationals II in Nashville, TN with 6.5 out of 7.

Justin's rating is well over 1800, and he has already beaten many masters, playing at the Marsahll Chess Club. This past year, he has participated in the World Youth Championships (France), the Pan-American Youth Championships (Ecuador), and in a friendly match between scholastic players from the US and Russia (Moscow).

Despite his rating and participation in international events, Justin still attends nearly every NYChessKids camp, because he enjoys interacting with the other students. Justin is serious when it comes to playing chess, but knows how to have fun as well.
